How is the diagnosis of coronavirus made?

The diagnosis of coronavirus is made with the collection of respiratory materials (airway aspiration or sputum induction). It is necessary to collect two samples in the suspected coronavirus.

The two samples will be sent urgently to the Central Public Health Laboratory (Lacen).

One of the samples will be sent to the National Influenza Center (NIC) and another sample will be sent for metagenomic analysis.

To confirm the disease, it is necessary to perform molecular biology tests that detect viral RNA. The diagnosis of the coronavirus is made with the collection of a sample, which is indicated whenever the identification of a suspected case occurs.

The collection of nasopharyngeal aspirate (NAP) or combined swabs (nasal/oral) or also a sample of lower respiratory secretion (sputum or tracheal lavage or bronchial alveolar lavage) is recommended.

Severe cases should be referred to a Reference Hospital for isolation and treatment. Mild cases should be monitored by Primary Health Care (PHC) and home precautionary measures should be instituted.

How the coronavirus (Covid-19)  is transmitted?

Transmission happens from one sick person to another  or by close contact (about 2 meters), through:

Saliva droplets.

sneeze.

Cough.

catarrh.

Touch or handshake.

objects or
surfaces
contaminated

How is the coronavirus treated?

There is no specific treatment for infections caused by human coronavirus. In the case of coronavirus, rest and consumption of plenty of water are recommended, in addition to some measures taken to relieve symptoms, according to each case, such as:

  • Use of medication for pain and fever (antipyretics and analgesics).

  • Use a humidifier in the bedroom or take a hot shower to help relieve throat and cough pain.

As soon as the first symptoms appear, it is essential to seek immediate medical help to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment.

All patients who are discharged during the first 07 days of the onset of the condition (any symptom independent of fever) should be alerted to the possibility of late worsening of the clinical condition and warning signs of complications such as: onset of fever (there may be cases initial fever without fever), elevation or recurrence of fever or respiratory signs, tachycardia (increased heart rate), pleuritic pain (chest pain), fatigue (tiredness) and dyspnea (shortness of breath).

If you have traveled to China or a country with confirmed cases of the disease in the last 14 days and have become ill with a fever, cough or difficulty breathing, you should seek medical attention immediately and provide a detailed description of your recent travel history and your symptoms.

Rest assured, but watch out!

Coronavirus (Covid-19) infection is a disease of low  Lethality. WHO data show that 80% of cases are  light. The biggest concern is when the disease affects the elderly  or people with chronic illnesses.
